Odell Mackinaw Derby goes to the top
The annual Odell Lake Resort Mackinaw Derby was held this weekend and the results should have lake trout fishermen everywhere checking out their calendar for the next available opportunity to head to Odell.
About 30 individual anglers entered the day and a half event. Anglers fished for a full twelve hours on Saturday followed by dinner and live music. Sunday morning anglers again hit the water at 6 am, with fishing time coming to a close at noon. The event finished with lunch and awards.
The top three places for the tournament were separated by a mere 12 oz. James Peterson won the event with a 20 pound Mack. The second place fish came in at 19.10 and third place ended up at 19.4.
According to Odell Lake Resort owner John Ditgen, blue and silver M2SP Flatfish and blue and silver J Plugs did most of the damage, but where many found the action was the big surprise. “You’d see kokanee jumping all over the surface as if they were being chased”, said Ditgen. “Guys started flat lining their gear and were catching fish barely below the surface. I’ve never seen anything like it”.
Fishermen should continue to see good fishing over the course of the next few weeks as water temperaturs should remain perfect for continued Mack success.
